Weatherproof-TPE for auto applications-PRA-Plastics and Rubber Asia China Industry News

Plastics used in exterior automotive applications can be exposed to severe weather influences. These applications often require a weatherproof plastic material that can withstand the negative impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation can have on visual appearance and mechanical properties of automotive parts. Therefore, weatherproof plastics that are UV-resistant are often specified for exterior use in the automotive sector.

Taking this into account, German TPE maker Kraiburg has introduced a new series of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) that were specially developed for weathering resistant with PP adhesion and UV resistance in automotive applications. The new compounds of the Thermolast K family are intended primarily for applications such as water deflectors and window encapsulation.

Besides the UV and weathering resistance and bonding to PP, the UV/HF/SF series allows for a surface without welding line, when processed using two-component injection moulding. This is achieved due to the flow properties of the TPE.

By means of a multi-component injection moulding process the best bonding properties are achieved and additional assembly steps are no longer necessary, with the cycle time reduced.

UV/HF/SF provides a broad spectrum of benefits, such as increasing the value of a design, economic processing and an expansion of product functions. They meet the typical requirements of different areas of use and automotive sectors, including PV3929 Kalahari natural weathering test for two years and PV3930 Florida test for outdoor use. This eventually allows the possibility of use in more exterior applications in the automotive sector, says Kraiburg.

The company also adds that the use of the TPE compounds in hot climate countries in the Asia Pacific region is especially useful to counter weathering effects in the region.
